Atalanta
was one of the Perdriau fleet that seviced the Balmain area
under that family and later, John Watson.
Prescott incorrectly refers to her as a paddle wheeler.
Both
Atalanta and
Courier were offered for sale in
1877 having been superseded by larger vessels. The advert definitely
states that the vessel was a screw steamer.
Prescott states she was wrecked in 1878. A short entry in a
newspaper on April 22nd of that year indicates that this may have been
due to an issue with the boilers and that the crew beached her after
dragging her ashore with her own dinghy. At this stage she is listed as
being owned by Small and Creer of the Belmore Sugar Mill at Ulmarra and
was valued at four hundred pounds.
The destruction of the vessel occured on Tuesday, April 16th 1878 off
the North Solitaries.
