Built
in Brisbane in 2011 with a sister vessel named
Capricorn Dancer these are the
first of a new style of fast ferry called an "Enviro Cat". A third
sister was under construction in December of 2011 to be named
Capricornian Dreamer.
The Enviro Cats were purposely designed by Transit Systems, in
conjunction with the Australian Maritime College and the Queensland
Government, to have a uniquely shaped, low draft hull that glides
across the water instead of slicing it, while water jet propulsion and
no external parts mean minimal risk of injury to marine flora and fauna.
Capricorn Spirit commenced two
weeks of trials with Manly Fast Ferries on the 8th of December 2011 to
determine the suitability of the vessel on the run.
